I’ve been doing an online restorative yoga class that I purchased on DailyOm (click here if you want to sign up!). Today’s message was about noticing your breath and your body and consciously choosing to GO SLOW. It’s so important to our health and well-being to notice when our body, mind and emotions get caught up in the rat race and to make the choice to slow down and be more present. So slowly breathe in the word GO…and slowly exhale the word SLOW. I wish you a mindful, loving day! This video was originally posted as a Facebook Live video. I recently found out that my cat has stage 4 kidney failure. After processing the initial shock that my almost 17 year old cat who I’ve had since he was just a baby is sick, I’m embracing the cat way of being in the moment and learning how to not worry about the future so much. I recently found this blog and reposted it on my Back to Life Facebook and Twitter pages. It got me thinking though and I wanted to add a few of my own thoughts. Self-care is one of those ideas that can be challenging. With our busy lives sometimes it’s hard to find even a few minutes to really focus on just yourself. When I make suggestions to my clients I try to make sure that what I suggest fits into their lifestyle and the activities they are already doing. For me it’s easy to do a couple of yoga stretches after each massage session while I wait for my client.
“Happiness is your job — the brain’s not gonna do that” – Tony Robbins Whoa! Mind-blown! I really resonated with this video because I have such a busy brain. Just ask my friends how much I worry about all kinds of stuff that I have no control over or no business worrying about! Tony says that our “minds are not designed to make us happy, they are designed to help us survive”. He also reminds us that our brains originally were designed to keep us safe from dangers, like saber tooth tigers. I don’t know who is fighting saber tooth tigers anymore but my mind certainly can make me feel.
I have a new client who has been coming almost weekly to alleviate some back pain that he has been experiencing. He said, “My back doesn’t hurt anymore. Maybe I shouldn’t come in as often.” I said, “Well, you don’t want to wait until you hurt to come in!”. So much of what I and my massage colleagues do is help PREVENT pain from being a PROBLEM. Pain is an indication that your body is unhappy and needs you to stop what you are doing and heal. Of course, there can be pain when you exercise or do some new activity that you haven’t done in awhile because you are.
